Garden design planning

Good garden design starts with thinking before digging.

Garden design takes time

It’s too late to plan your garden when you are standing in the nursery eyeing every new plant that tempts you. Spend some time looking at your garden site, either during the off season, when you can really view it objectively or during the growing season, when your successes and failures make themselves known.

Once you have an idea of how you are going to use your garden, come back to reality and take an objective look at the site before you come up with your garden design. This is of utmost gravity in determining which plants and trees you use to achieve the desired effect.
Monitor it during different times of the day and year.
How many hours of sun does the site receive?
What times of day is it sunny?
Does sun exposure change with the seasons? Do trees allow sun in the spring and shade during summer?
How is the soil, as far as pH and texture? Link to amendments
Are there structures or large trees that will affect plant growth and selection?
Are there structures nearby that you would like to camouflage?
What plants are already growing there?

You know what you want to use your garden for, what you are working with and what resources you can devote to it. Now, what do you want it to look like?

Formal or informal? Wild?
Should it complement your house?
Do you want it to flow with the natural landscape?
Do you favor soft pastels or bold tropicals?

All these things might seem overwhelming, but you’ll be saving yourself a lot of time and a considerable amount of money if you take this advice and you’ll find that each step gets easier and innumerable fun. Plant selection should be one of the last things you consider, or you may be overwhelmed trying to create a garden design to accommodate the dozens (or hundreds or even thousands) of plants you crave.

Before you buy that first plant, you have to know what your planting zone is. Without that knowledge, you can end up ordering all sorts of wonderful looking plants and shrubs only to find that they are not suitable for your planting zone and they will die. You will have spent time and money needlessly. If you’re buying by catalog or online, every plant and seed catalog or online merchant should show a planting zone map and each plant depicted should have an indication of the zones in which that particular plant (or tree, etc.) will thrive. You can also contact your local garden clubs or your county’s Agriculture Extension Bureau with your questions regarding the suitability and care of plants for your particular area. This knowledge is of critical momentousness, particularly if you have moved from one zone to another. Not only will you save money, but you will avoid countless hours of frustrating work in your garden.

Keep in mind what your garden will be used for and when. This is important in your plant consideration. If you plan to entertain a lot and don’t want to spend all summer on chores, look for lower majortenance plants that don’t require constant deadheading and staking to look good and, if you are planting for small children, choose plants that will bloom at their eye level, with interesting textures and scents and non-poisonous flowers and seeds.

Make a list of the plants you like and group them by color, texture and form – the garden design triumvirate. Also chart them by season of bloom and/or interest. Consider both flowers and foliage. There are heavier and extended plants being bred with colorful foliage that will provide interest in the garden all season.

Be sure to include some large anchor plants that will look good all year. These are usually shrubs and often evergreens. Most gardens can only accommodate 1 or 2 trees or shrubs, but they are important for providing the good bones of the garden and you want to choose wisely at the beginning. Trees and shrubs can be very difficult and heavy to move around.

Planting bulbs for added beauty

A wonderful way to use bulbs effectually is to naturalize daffodils in a wooded area or group them for colorful accent around evergreen shrubs. High quality Dutch flower bulbs can be ordered online from reputable catalogers and merchants who will advise you as to what’s appropriate for your zone.

Plan ahead when planting bulbs; i.e., for spring flowering you plant in the Fall. Follow directions accompanying your bulbs regarding depth (usually six inches) and fertilizer (there are special bulb fertilizers that should be put in the planting holes). An important reminder – again: Know your planting zone before ordering any bulbs. They all look so beautiful in the catalogs, but what grows well in the midwest, in most instances, will not grow in South Florida! Special tools for planting bulbs are also available online. They make digging holdes so much easier than using a simple trowel. Check them out.

Happy planting!

Chrysanthemum (chrysanthemum sinese and chrysanthemum indictum) are from the Asteraceae (compositae) family, and are related to marigolds, zinnias, dahlias and sunflowers. Originally cultivated in China, this remarkable flower is now grown all over the world. There are over 200 species in the genus. The name Chrysanthemum is derived from the Greek, (chyros), meaning “golden and anthos”, meaning “flower”. The flowers come in every color except blue, and are centrally used for ornamental purposes in the United States. They are, however, used as a food in salads, cooking, beverages, and can be found in many markets.

The Chinese use chrysanthemum as a cooling beverage to help alleviate headaches and fever, and also to remove toxins from the body. The flowers are also known to act as a blood purifier, counteracting inflammation, and relieving symptoms of vertigo (dizziness). Studies have shown that chrysanthemum flowers can improve vision and are used for a wide range of eye problems such as eye strain, night blindness, redness and eye soreness. Chrysanthemum also shows a potential for treating angina by dilating coronary arteries. It is also used as an anti-hypertensive (to lower high blood pressure). Another remarkable study shows that chrysanthemum possesses strong activity against abnormal growths and is proving to be an antibiotic against a wide range of pathogens. There are at least fifteen compounds isolated from the edible flowers, all possessing potent inhibitory effects against abnormal cell division. The chemical constituents of Chrysanthemum include flavonoids, choline, vitamin B1, betaine and stachydrine.

Helpful Ideas For Designing A Flower Garden

Filed under: Flowers — Administrator @ 11:18 pm

Abstract: Tropical Flower
Tag:

There is one thing that all flower gardens have in common -
gorgeous flowering plants. What sets one flower garden apart
from another is the structure and design surrounding the
flowers. The most attractive flower gardens have been planned
carefully and designed precisely. In order to plan and design a
beautiful flower garden, you must plan in advance and choose
plants that will compliment one another.

Before finalizing your flower garden plans it is a good idea to
visit your local nursery to get an idea of which flowers appeal
to you and what types and colors of flowers will compliment each
other nicely. Try to choose plants that flower at varying times
of the year and that offer a wide variety of colors. Different
textures and greenery will give you the number one results. Also,
choose a mixture of annuals and perennials. Annuals are flowers
that must be planted each year and perennials are flowers that
return year after year with no need to replant.

It is always helpful to make a rough drawing of the outline of
your flower garden and begin adding various elements from there.
You will have to decide upon the border of your flower garden
and the shape of the bed. A border is the area around the
outside of your garden and the bed is the area inside the
border. You can choose plants, stones, or edging for the border
and then fill the bed with a variety of flowering plants.

In choosing the types of flowers you will grow in your garden,
spend a little time researching the highest types of flowers for
your area. Some flowers will do well in any part of the country
while others will only produce flowers in certain climates.
Choosing plants that are native to your particular area is
always a good idea, especially for beginners. Native plants are
ones that grow naturally in your region and will require the
least amount of care and controllingtenance.

Take a Step Towards Weight Loss

Take a Step Towards Weight Loss

As children, one of the first exercises we learned how to do was walking. While it may seem like an elementary form of exercise, walking can do wonders for the heart, the circulatory system, and our legs. Walking can also be instrumental in helping individuals to lose weight.

Medical experts say the important thing to keep in mind when starting a walking program is distance rather than time. In essence, it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to complete a mile–the important thing is to do it. If you hope to burn off two pounds a week, you will need to walk enough to burn about 3500 calories. If you weigh 160 pounds and you are walking at a rate of two miles per hour, you can burn as many as 105 calories.

A helpful technique when beginning a walking program is to build up your leg muscles so that you are able to burn additional calories. If you can, try to race-walk. Your goal should be to finish a mile in 13 minutes. Another technique you can use is by adding weights to your walking routine. For instance, you can pack eight pound weights into a backpack and wear it as you walk.

Ultimately, you might want to work up to the point where you are walking at least six hours a week. In addition to helping you to shed pounds, this will enable you to combat such diseases as diabetes and cancer. You should feel healthier–and perhaps happier–as a result of your walking.

At this point, you might be wondering whether to do your walking outdoors or on a treadmill at a gym. The choice is really up to you. It depends largely on what makes you in addition comfortable. Some people enjoy being out of doors–they like looking at the trees and the flowers as they move along. Others find that the traffic and animals found outdoors can be too distracting. Also, many people find it difficult to walk in the rain or snow. Some individuals like the discipline offered by a treadmill, while others find it boring and confining. One advantage to a treadmill is that it allows you to keep track of the number of miles you logged, as well as your speed. That can be costly information when you’re attempting to chart your progress.

Of course, it’s incomparable if you couple walking with a sound diet plan. You should attempt to consume at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables. Limit your intake of high-fat foods and sweets. Sensible eating will also enable you to essentialtain your weight over the long term.

When you set out to walk, make sure that you begin with some stretching exercises. These can help prepare your muscles for your workout. In addition, begin your walk with a five or ten-minute warm up period. The rest of your walk should be brisk–you should be walking at a pace similar to what you would use if you were late getting to work. You should continue this pace for approximately 30 minutes, then begin a cool-down period where you walk at a extended moderate pace. Following this regimen should ensure that you get the most out of your walking.

One of the nonpareil aspects of walking is that it is an activity that nearly any able-bodied person can do. It does not require special equipment or special training. It is important, however, that you rehead committed to walking. Doing it for just one or two days a week is probably not enough to make an appreciable difference in your weight. Rather, you should aim to do a brisk walk at least six days a week. Once you get into the habit of walking, you should find it relatively easy to continue. It’s something that can quickly become part of your morning routine. In fact, some experts recommend that you do your walking in the morning to ensure that your metabolism is elevated throughout your day. Walking late at night will not have the same effect; it will do little to raise your daily metabolism.

5 Ways to Use Soundbites Skillfully

Words are the ambassadors of our intentions. Whenever anyone
calls to hire me as a media coach I listen closely to the
way they express themselves with words. More importantly, I
listen to perceive who they are as a person. Once you open
your mouth to speak to anyone anywhere, you are auditioning.
You are vying for their attention, for their time, for their
commitment to you and whatever you have to promote.

1. Choose the right words.

Soundbites are the lightening flashes of who you are and the
message you want to get across. To say what you mean and
mean what you say, develop your soundbites word for word.
The process of developing your soundbites is about peeling
away the unnecessary to arrive at the essential. But before
you peel.

2. Create six dynamic soundbites.

In order to speak your way to the hearts and minds of
people, you should have about six soundbites or talking
points. Soundbites are the essential things you want to
convey. They are memory nuggets, or blurbable ideas designed
to be easy for your audience to digest. You can incorporate
these six juicy jewels in any conversation. They can consist
of anecdotes, facts, statistics, stories, or something
unlikely, unusual, controversial, shocking, funny, humorous,
romantic, poignant, emotionally moving, or dramatic.

These six things will make your audience get their rear in
gear to dash out to buy your product or service, choose you
for a project or spokesperson, or pick up the phone right
now to order whatever you are selling. More than that, they
promise and deliver something worthwhile.

3. Acknowledge six of the most important things in stories
and in life: beauty, poetry, music, timing, truth and
nuance.

As a media coach I’m immersed in the squeezing down of
concepts into a few pithy phrases that catch attention.
Recently, I was talking to a client whose stories were
already sifted into simplicity. That day I read a quote on
the internet that said, *Simplify things to their simplest
form, but no simpler.* She had. But the result was massed like
pulp than ripe fruit. I asked for the expanded version so I
could taste their full flavor and help her decide how they
should be juiced down.

I try to view these soundbites as a new form of language-
haiku versus open verse, a Zen fountain versus a mountain
stream, flowers in a windowsill box versus a field of
poppies ready to take you to a land deep in the opiated
imagination. It is important to savor the lushness of nuance
and the musical flow of language while shaving off
unimportant details.

4. Make potent points.

Keeping to your most potent points makes an interview move
forward higher smoothly. Jane Swigart Ph.D, wrote her book,
*The Myth of the Perfect Mother* to help mothers parent
without guilt. To convey the difficulty and complexity of
motherhood, she came up with some key phrases like, *Being a
mother is like asking half the population to do brain
surgery without sending them to medical school.* And, *There
is a myth that women are divinely prepared for caregiving.*
Both phrases are short, to the point and can be spoken in
less than 10 seconds.

5. Find your own voice.

Your voice is as personal as your thumbprint. You may not
recognize it as such, but your pets, neighbors, loved ones
and colleagues do. You use phrases and have mannerisms that
are like the billboards that holler over city highways. Ask
your friends and family what your billboards are. They’ll be
able to tell you right away. Ask yourself which of these
patterns should be amplified, and which should be toned
down. Do you have a signature story that you tell over and
over again? These stories are one way we frame our lives.
Begin to notice how you talk about your experiences.
