New Yam Festival 2005 Celebrated In Germany

A grandiose new yam festival was celebrated on the 08th of October, 2005 in Hamburg Germany by the Orlu Senatorial Development Union and their well wishers.

The occasion was marked with lots of cultural festivities, rites and abundant African menu. The special highlights of the occasion were: The award of the leading African dressed ladies and Gentlemen, The presentation of the Okonko cultural Dance and the Afro-Brazilian Show.

For the Igbos, the occasion of Iri-ji (eating of the new yam) is a cultural festival of great significance. In each of the individual farm-communities, this special occasion is used to mark the eating of the new yam. In Igboland, this day of feasting ushers in not only the yam harvest season and bids farewell to the cultivation period, but is also a thanksgiving day.

Mr Oguike the President of the Igbo community in France, the star guest at the occasion, described “the new yam festival, in our tradition, as the culmination of a work cycle and the beginning of another.”

During the festival people in the community use the occasion to thank God for the arrival of the new harvest of yams (a time of plenty: a contrast to the farming season) and perform traditional special rites to declare the new yam fit for general consumption. It presents the right conditions for all and sundry, family and friends to come together and demonstrate their commitment and solidarity to the local institutions.

In Igbo communities the solemn role of eating the first yam is performed by the oldest man in the community or the king, as the case may be. The belief is that their position nonpareilows on them the privilege of being intermediaries between their communities and the gods of the land. The rituals that attend the new yam eating are meant to express the community’s appreciation to the gods for making the harvest-yields possible.

The intrusion of Christianity notwithstanding, customarily, Igbo traditionalists and title holders are not expected to taste the new yam until the new yam festival is celebrated.

At the new yam festival, dishes of yam are served along with other African dishes since the festival is symbolic for abundance and the onset of a new life circle.

What are yams?

Yams are vegetable root crops (tubers) native to Africa grown in tropical regions around the world, Though many think they closely resemble sweet potatoes, yams are not related in anyway to the sweet potatoes.

Classification of Yams:

Yams belong to the family Dioscoreacea, and are tubers most often grown on a tropical vine. The word “yam” is African for the phrase, “to eat.” hence the derivative: “yom-yom”

There are 150 different varieties of yams, including the air-potato, the only true yam cultivated in the United States and in some southern countries of Europe .

A large, esculent, farinaceous tuber of various climbing plants of the genus Dioscorea; also, the plants themselves. Mostly natives of warm climates. The plants have netted-veined, petioled leaves, and pods with three broad wings. The commonest species is D.sativa, but several others are cultivated.

Chinese yam: This is a plant (Dioscorea Batatas) with a long and slender tuber, harder than most of the other species.

Wild yam: (a) A common plant (Dioscorea villosa) of the Eastern United States , having a hard and knotty rootstock. (b) An orchidaceous plant (Gastrodia sesamoides) of Australia and Tasmania .

Growing Conditions:

Yam plants bear thick tubers, with an alternating climbing stems with leaves, and sometimes flowers. The greater majority of yam plants are grown in warm regions of the tropics. In Africa and New Guinea , the yam is the primary agricultural commodity. In the United States , sweet potatoes outnumber yam plants and consumption.

Physical Appearance:

Yams vary in size, shape and flavour by species. The flesh of the yam can be white, yellow, pink or purple. Some yams are sweet, some are tasteless, and others are bitter. Some varieties of yams grow up to 7 feet in length, and can weigh up to 150 pounds.

Versatile, edible, Vegetable crop:

Yams are a versatile vegetable, which is easy to prepare and cook. All varieties of yams can be boiled, grilled, fried, roasted or baked.

Buying Yams:

Imported Yam tubers from Africa are available and sold today worldwide in most Afro shops especially in the USA and Europe . Because most varieties of yams are large in size, it is rare to find whole yams in any produce section in North America . Look for yams which are free of blemishes and bruises, and have tight, unwrinkled skins. The flesh of the yam should feel firm.

Storing Yams:

Yams should be stored in a cool, dark, dry area. They can be safely kept for up to two weeks. Uncooked yams should never be refrigerated. Cooked yams can be refrigerated for 3 days.

For you and your spouse, the wedding reception could be considered as one of the most important and most elaborate parties of your life. It is a celebration of your unity together as husband and wife and something that could be cherished for the rest of your lives.

In order to make sure that your wedding reception goes smoothly and memorable, you have to take into account several factors such as the food, cake, wine, flowers, music, dance, and other form of entertainment. Most of the time, a fancy reception is not necessary.

As long as you provide food and drinks and maybe some music and dance for entertainment, your guests will be pleased. It?s all about the way you host the event that makes for a successful party. Below are just a few suggestions to help you have an outstanding wedding reception.

Plan ahead: Unless you and your fianc? want to have your wedding ceremony on a certain date such as your first date or your anniversary, it is massed practical to find and reserve a place to hold your reception first before picking the date for the wedding ceremony. Reserving a location for your reception often takes a year to book in advance, especially during wedding months between April and October.

If your reception starts two or even three hours after the wedding, you are responsible for your guests between the times when the wedding ceremony ends to the time when the reception starts. Make sure that all your guests are entertained, especially those from out of town.

You could ask a relative or a close friend to have hors d? oeuvres or maybe even serve some cocktails at his or her house or you can find a close by hotel and arrange some kind of hospitality suite. If the delay is due to having photographs taken, you should consider taking them before the start of the ceremony or at the reception where the guests are there and watch the process.

The ancient Egyptians made their own clothes from what their environment and nature gave them. Egypt has mostly a hot climate thus the use of clothes reflect material that is lightweight to suit this type of climate. The ancient Egyptians thus used clothes made of linen.

The ancient Egyptians both men and women wore linen clothes all throughout the hot weather. The men wore short skirts around their waists called kilts, while the women wore straight fitting dresses with straps on their shoulders. The wealthy men wore pleated kilts, and the older men wore a longer kilt. When doing hard work, men wore a loin cloth, and women wore a short skirt. Children usually ran around nude during the summer months.

HOW LINEN WAS MADE
Linen is a fabric made from plant fibers. The plant fiber comes from flax plants that grow abundantly along the banks of the Nile. The flax plants are plants having small leaves, blue flowers and stems about two feet tall. Flax was pulled out of the ground, not cut. This work was done mostly by men. Half-ripe flax stems made the number one thread. If the stems were too ripe, they were used for mats and rope. Flax stems were soaked for several days then fibers were separated. Then the fibers were beaten until soft. The resulting fibers are then spun into thread. The thread is woven into linen fabric from which the garments are made. Most Egyptians wore garments made from linen. This type of fabric is light, airy, and allows freedom of movement, which are important characteristics because of the hot and sometimes humid climate of Egypt.

In Ancient Egypt, women were predominately in charge of textile manufacturing and garment making. Garment making was a household chore, but woman also worked for aristocrats in spinning and weaving shops. Every garment from the decorative dresses of queens and the elaborate, pleated kilts of the pharaohs to the simpler kilts and aprons of the common people were handmade by woman.

The tools involved in garment making include knives and needles, both of these needed to be molded, shaped or craved. In predynastic times, knives were made out of stone and the needles were made from bones. However, during the Old Kingdom, they were both made out of copper. Then, in the Middle Kingdom, bronze replaced the copper. Knives and needles were molded. Surprisingly, the eyes of needles were not bored. They were “scratched out with a hard, pointed instrument, probably a stone.” With these tools and linen, garments were fashioned to suit the needs of the people based on climate and the social status.

All men, from the tomb worker to the pharaoh, wore a kind of kilt or apron that varied in length over the years, from halfway above the knee, to halfway below it. It was tied at the front, folded in at the side, or in two knots at the hips. A sleeved, shirt-like garment also became fashionable. Men were always clean-shaven, they used razors made from bronze to shave their beards and heads. Women wore straight, ankle-length dresses that usually had straps that tied at the neck or behind the shoulders. Some dresses had short sleeves or women wore short robes tied over their shoulders. Later fashions show that the linen was folded in many tiny vertical pleats and fringes were put at the edges.

The wealthy people both men and women wore long see-through robes that were pleated. Noblemen would sometimes wear a long robe over his kilt, while the women wore long pleated dresses with a shawl. Some kings and queens wore decorative ceremonial clothing with feathers. Wealthy people wore sandals made of leather that had straps across the instep and between the first and second toes.
Most people went barefoot, but wore sandals on special occasions. The king wore very elaborately decorated sandals, and sometimes decorative gloves on his hands. The sandals were sometimes made of palm fiber or braided papyrus together with leather sandals.

Clothing styles were chosen for comfort in the hot, dry climate of Egypt, while in the winter, wraps and cloaks were worn.

Women did not dress without washing (rich people had a tiled area for washing). After washing, they rubbed themselves with scented oil then they placed a large rectangle of linen over their heads, gathered the loose corners up and tied them in a knot below the chest. The usual toilet articles were tweezers, razor and comb.
Priests washed several times a day and they had to remove all body hair to be pure enough to approach the god. They could not wear leather sandals or wool clothing (considered unclean). They wore a leopard robe when serving the god Amun.

The Egyptians cared about their appearance a great deal. The women spent a lot of time bathing, rubbing oils and perfumes into their skin, and using their many cosmetic implements to apply make-up and style their wigs. Using a highly-polished bronze hand mirror, a woman would apply khol, a black dye kept in a jar or pot, to line her eyes and eyebrows, using an “brush” or “pencil” made of a reed. Men wore this eye make-up as well, which was not only a fashion but also protected against the eye infections which were common in Egypt. They would use a dye called henna to redden their nails and lips. Wigs were worn by men and women. Wigs were made from human hair or wool. They wore curled wigs for special occasions.

Egyptians adorned themselves with as much jewelry as they could afford. Wealthy people wore broad collars made of gold and precious stones liked together, which fastened at the back of the neck. Pairs of bracelets were worn around the wrist or high on the arm, above the elbow. Rings and anklets were also worn. Women wore large round earrings and put bands around their heads or held their hair in place with ivory and metal hair pins. Ordinary people wore necklaces made of brightly colored pottery beads.

Planning A Flower Garden

Filed under: Flowers — Administrator @ 11:28 pm

Abstract: Wholesale Silk Flower
Tag:

If you’re planning to start a flower garden, you might be a
little stumped when it comes to choosing flowers. Although
there’s no such thing as a bad choice of flowers, there are some
choices that can take your garden from okay to simply
magnificent. Consider these simple tips when you’re trying to
choose which beautiful blooms you want for your garden.

First of all, how much light do you have? If your garden is
located in an area that gets direct sunlight for part of the
time, and shade for the rest of the time, your flower choices
are almost infinite. The majority of flowers in the world are
leading adapted to these half-and-half lighting conditions. If your
garden area is very sunny, on the other hand, consider planting
flowers that not only enjoy sunlight, but can stand up to direct
heat. A few good strong sunlight flowers are sunflowers (of
course) and daylilies. On the other hand, if your area is in addition
on the shady side, go for lower-light flowers such as irises,
tiger lilies, or honeysuckle. These plants are greater tolerant of
the cooler temperature in the shade, and their photosynthesis
process is adapted to smaller amounts of sunlight.

What about soil? If you’re planting in a rocky area, you may
have some trouble getting many plants to take root. The ideal
dirt for flowers, of course, is black, fine dirt without much
rubble. If you live in an area where the ground has a sand
consistency, look into planting local flowers- those will be the
ones most adapted to growing in sand, such as violets.

Now comes the fun part. Once you get an idea of what types of
flowers you’re able to grow, it’s time to think about what types
you’d like to grow. Try drawing out your garden on a sheet of
paper, based on the various heights the plants are expected to
reach. Try framing sunflowers with ground covering plants that
will flourish in the shade of the taller plants around them. Pay
attention to the colors of the blossoms and arrange them in a
pleasing manner. Use your imagination here- feel free to plan a
garden with a strict outline, featuring only blue and yellow
flowers; or let your brain and your garden run wild, with bursts
of random color everywhere. It’s up to you.

Keep in mind that the first year of a flower garden is only the
beginning. If you truly want to enjoy your garden to the utmost,
try to plant perennials that will return next season. That will
give the plants a year to mature and gain strength, and with a
little luck, you’ll be surprised each year with a flourishing
flower garden that gets stronger and brighter as time goes by.

How To Check If Cut Flowers Are Fresh

Filed under: Flowers — Administrator @ 2:31 pm

Abstract: Flower Delivery Los Angeles

Fresh flowers should feel crisp or firm. Before you buy, run your hand under the flower heads from stem to petal tip. Proceed gently under the petals so as not to bruise them.

If the flower vendor objects, give them a withering look and enquire in a loud voice, “Are these flowers fresh?”

If the flowers feel soft, cool or damp, don’t buy them.

Keep testing the other bunches until you find a good one. Often there are only one or two bunches older than the others. Look and listen. Really fresh flowers will make a soft rustling sound as you stroke them.

As flowers age:

  • the foliage will start to yellow from the bottom upwards
  • the stems will discolor from the bottom up as bacteria spreads from the cut
  • seeds or pollen on the flower head will open and shed spores
  • the petals will fade in colour, lose moisture, dehydrate and eventually collapse

Remember:

Change the water daily, recut the stems often and enjoy your flowers longer.
